Getting to know you

It's another edition of "getting to know you". Today we have Pam, doula-working-Mom of 3 that loves the Lord.

*Remember is you want to be featured here you have to become a follower. I randomly pick from my followers on the left sidebar!

How long have you been married? I got married last year in 2008.  We are still really newlyweds.

How did you meet your husband? Met my husband, Bo, on-line. Yes, it was actually one of those dating sites. I had never done that before. It was scary and exciting all at the same time.  I was completely surprised. It was clear that it was all THE LORD in our meeting and getting married.

How many kids do you have? ages? I have 3 children. 2 by my first marriage.  My oldest son is almost 21. My daughter is almost 18 and my youngest is 2 1/2. Yes, 2 years and 6 months. That is NOT a typo.  I was told after my first child that we would never have children.  We adopted when he was about 11 and brought home our daughter who was 8 at the time.  My youngest is a blessing and a surprise. He keeps me young!!!!

Are you a stay at home mom? No, I am currently working full-plus time. I would give anything to stay at home.  I was able to be a semi-SAHM when we adopted our daughter but had to go back to work and have been there ever since.  I enjoy my work in a medical office but I would love to be a Doula full-time and stay home if not at a delivery.

What are some things you like to do for fun? Read, blog, run, exercise, teach Prenatal and Postnatal Fitness Classes, play with and spend time with my friends and family. I have discovered through a close group of friends that beading and making jewelry is a blast!!!!!!!  LOVE IT!!!!!!!

As a mom, how do you find time for yourself? This is VERY difficult. My husband is ALWAYS telling me to take time for me. This is so hard because if I am doing something for me, that means I might miss something.  I feel very selfish but know that it is necessary and when I finally give in and go and have a coffee with a friend, go to dinner, go out shopping or window shopping, I come back refreshed and chances are, I didn't miss a thing.

What is your most embarrassing moment? Talking to someone about hiring a Doula and realizing that just because she has a tunic type shirt does not mean that she is pregnant. Non-pregnant people don't need a Doula. I could have died when she told me she was NOT pregnant. NEVER will I do that again!!!!!!

Tell me about being a doula. How long have you been a doula? What are the benefits of having one? I have always thought I would be a nurse. I made a choice a long time ago and chose not to finish college. Thought about returning several times but it didn't work out and I am totally ok with that. I wanted and thought I would always work in Labor and Delivery.  That is where I would spend my days. Well, working in an Ob/Gyn office, you see, read and hear a lot about research and what helps women and labor and what does not. I kept seeing information about being a Doula and thought...I can do that.  I did my research and thought "I" had it all planned out. "I" tried for about 4 years to go and take the 3 day class. Typically a scheduling issue or something financial would happen and then I couldn't go. Last August through The Lord working out EVERY last detail, I went and took the course.  3 days at the YWCA here in Greensboro. Agreeing to be a Doula at no charge to 3 teen mom's. That was the fee for the class. I had no idea what the Lord had planned for me. I have had way more than 3 teen mom's and today, a little over a year later, I am waiting on the phone call for baby #16.  There is something about meeting with a Mom and her support system, whether it's a boyfriend, Mom, Dad, Husband and planning THAT BirthDay. It is just amazing!!!!! To see her become a Mother. It can be overwhelming and just breathtaking.
Benefits of having a doula.....Less need for pain medication. Less need for C-Section. Mom is empowered. Mom and family are supported emotionally, mentally and physically. Doula's are NOT midwives. We are there for Mom and do whatever she needs.  Massage, brushing hair, foot massage, washing faces, holding hands, being a focal point, standing in the gap when other support needs to rest, eat or whatever.  I am passionate about being a Doula.  I wouldn't have it anyother way.  I even have a website  www.motheringthemotherinnc.com

What is your inspiration for blogging? To share birth stories, To share what the Lord is doing through Mothering The Mother. To share my family and my faith. A place for me to journal. I am a journal fanatic!!!!!!!

Is there anything else you'd like to share with us about yourself?  I am passionate about my Lord. I am passionate about my family. I love pregnant women. It makes no difference if you are teen or a mature Mom. This is an exciting time and I want to help you make it the best that it can be. I love to run.  I have completed one marathon, 3 1/2 marathons and getting ready to return to Myrtle Beach in Feb. 2010.

Go visit Pam's blog and leave her some love! Thanks Pam!

  3. It's nice to meet you Pam! I have given birth twice at a birthing center where they have lots of doulas in training and was told both time I would have a doula in training at the birth and neither time they showed up, so I don't know what it would be like to have one but it sounds like it would be so nice to have someone there to help the mom who is not as clueless about what a laboring mom might need as the husband, and is not busy with the medical details like the midwife.
