We will get into food later, today I want to compare some baby products. Before buying the baby products we currently use, I went to cosmeticdatabase.com to research them. Cosmetic data base gives each product a score 0-10. Ten being highly toxic and hazordous. It breaks down the ingredients in the product and what they are linked to such as cancer, immunotoxicity, allergies, and other health concerns.
Lets take a look at a few of the more popular baby products:
This is usually a staple in most households with babies. It's claims to be "soap-free, dye-free, hypoallergenic and allergy free- and dermatologist-tested" according to the Johnson and Johnson website. Did you know the FDA doesn't require any proof on any of the claims a cosmetic company makes? And the FDA does not review what goes into cosmetics. That's why we have to read the labels! This product contains "Laureth Sulfate" which can cause skin and eye irritation.....that really doesn't sound hypoallergenic to me! And did you know the term hypoallergenic doesn't have any regulatory term with the FDA?? There are several ingredients in this product that are linked to cancer, premature breast development, low sperm count, and several other adverse health effects. As I stated in this post, we use several California Baby products. None of their scores go above a three. I am very happy with their products so far. Another thing I love is that they can be found at most Target stores. This one has a score of 1 on cosmetic data base. Yes they are more expensive than Johnson and Johnson but I am willing to spend the extra money if it means less toxins.
Next time you go shopping remember don't get all excited just because something claims to be "organic" or "natural"! Read the label and do research of the product first!

ReplyDeleteI never have also never heard of that website, but yeah the stuff in shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. has some pretty nasty stuff. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I set out on my own quest for clean a couple of year's ago when my daughter sprayed a safe Clorox cleaner on her face. Everything goes through the cosmetics data base at our house - it's so scary what they can put in products. I started researching on finally found a company called Shaklee. Used the products for over a year and decided to sell them. Every single Shaklee product is 100% safe to use - no nasties in anything. It's nice to buy with confidence that I'm not unknowingly harming my family.

ReplyDeleteYou know that I agree. My pediatrician actually wanted to do a study on the J&J products making cradle cap worse not better but was afraid they might take her out(she was kidding about this part)if she did.

Fluoride and sunscreen are HORRIBLE for you too! Bleh! It is really sad that they are allowed to put so many chemicals into things we absorb through our skin daily. We buy fluoride-free toothpaste (Tom's Of Maine- the one we get scores a 2 for toxins) and Earth Mama Angel Baby's Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash (which scores a 0 for toxins- hooray!) among other natural personal care products. What I really need to find is deodorant that actually works that doesn't have all the toxic stuff in it. I usually have to wear mens deodorant because women's doesn't work on me. Anyone know of a natural deodorant that actually works? My current deodorant scores a 4! Ick!
